A tripod has three legs which are usually made out of metal or carbon fibre. These three legs will provide anincredible amount of support to your dslr camera, this then means that you will be able to capture amazing images without camera shake each and every time.
One great feature of a tripod is that they allow you to take images at any time even if there is no light to begin with. Some cool images can be captured and created when a dslr camera is attached to a good strong tripod. If you leave your camera on your tripod and set a shutter speed of 30 seconds, then point your camera facing the sky then you will have captured the rotation of the earth as the stars in the sky will have rotated leaving impressive and beautiful looking star trails.
If you want to make sure that your images are tack sharp each and every time then a tripod is an excellent way of achieving this.
Monopod
A monopod is similar to a tripod in that it allows the photographer to capture images with less movement, however unlike the tripod the monopod only has one leg. The monopod only has one leg because it is used in places that a tripod would be too dangerous to do so and to bulky.
If you watch sports then you may have seen sports photographers on the side of the pitch with monopods, this allows these photographers to move around to capture their images without getting in the way of other people.
Conclusion of Tripods Vs Monopods
Having a tripod is a must have for any serious photographer. Using a tripod will allow you to capture your images without you ever having to worry about blurry pictures. A monopod on the other hand is a more specialised piece of equipment, because of this your less likely to see a monopod being used than a tripod.
If you're looking to photograph sports then I recommend getting a monopod, for everyone else get a tripod.
